Washington Balalaika Society presents "Mystery of Romance"
Saturday, November 23 at 8 p.m.
WBS fall concerts revolve around The Mystery of Romance, celebrating the joy it can bring, as well as its more sorrowful moments. This theme will be interpreted by the emotive playing of Andrei Saveliev and the mellifluous voice of Isaiah Trofimenko. The romantic sounds of the “Meteor Waltz” will be followed by “Stenka Razin Fantasy,” about a Cossack leader whose crew turned against him when he brought along his captured bride. In order to prevent a mutiny, he reportedly threw her overboard! The program includes Tchaikovsky’s familiar “None but the Lonely Heart,” the heart-rending “Adagio in G” attributed to Albinoni, and Rachmaninov’s “Harvest of Sorrow.” The “Zacatecas March” demonstrates the love the residents of that Mexican state have for their capital city. The famous spirited Ukrainian dance, “Hopak,” was arranged for WBS by our friend, Volodymyr Marunych. After several pieces inspired by daily lives and loves, Dvorak’s “Slavonic Dance #8” wraps up this unique and moving concert.
The Washington Balalaika Society is a community orchestra of musicians who perform the music of Eastern Europe, Ukraine, Russia, and many other countries, on traditional folk instruments. It is the largest orchestra of its kind in America, and has been performing in the Greater Washington, D.C. area for 36 years. WBS supports the Ukrainian people and provides humanitarian support for displaced Ukrainian refugees.
